Laman Becomes First Ark. Library System to Win a Website Award

Last week, some exciting news came our way: The William F. Laman Public Library System of North Little Rock became the first library system in Arkansas to win a website award.

We received the Prism Award for the outstanding use of a website as part of a public relations program from the Public Relations Society of America - Arkansas Chapter. Organizations and businesses from all across the state submitted entries into the contest. An out-of-state committee judged the entries and selected the Arkansas State Chamber of Commerce and the William F. Laman Public Library System as finalists in the website category, and subsequently named Laman Library the winner.

What Twilight, the Dictionary and the Bible Have in Common

For one week every year, libraries across the country celebrate a principle we hold very dear: intellectual freedom.

Libraries constantly face pressure from groups and individuals to restrict or remove materials from their collections. Challenged materials range from "Captain Underpants" to "Webster's Dictionary."

Book Club Blog

Do you love to read and talk about books with friends or even perfect strangers but can't find the time to carve out book club meetings? Now you don't have to miss out on book clubs anymore.

At the Laman Book Club Blog, gather a group of people, pick a book and voice your thoughts whenever is convenient for you. When you've picked a book, shoot us an e-mail to let us know what the book is so we can post the jacket cover, title and synopsis. Then all you have to do is find the book your club is reading, and start interacting in the comment stream below that book. This way, life is never too busy to talk about books.

Devil in the White CityTwo men, each handsome and unusually adept at his chosen work, embodied an element of the great dynamic that characterized America’s rush toward the twentieth century.

The architect was Daniel Hudson Burnham, the fair's brilliant director of works and the builder of many of the country's most important structures, including the Flatiron Building in New York and Union Station in Washington, D.C. The murderer was Henry H. Holmes, a young doctor who, in a malign parody of the White City, built his "World's Fair Hotel" just west of the fairground -- a torture palace complete with dissection table, gas chamber, and 3,000-degree crematorium.
